European Commission, 6th Framework project
Project
Delays in calling the emergency medical services, especially in case of physical or mental disorders resulting from strokes or falls, leads to extended hospitalisation and an increased number of elderly people being sent to nursing home which decreases their quality of life unnecessarily as well as resulting in considerable additional costs.
EMERGE intends to address this situation by supporting elderly people with innovative emergency monitoring and prevention.
Challenges
The innovation is to model the typical behaviour of elderly people with medical risks in order to detect deviations from their typical behaviour patterns.
Daily activity, location and other vital data is tracked using ambient and unobtrusive sensors in order to detect abnormalities and to identify early indicators for potentially arising emergencies such as strokes, falls or similar emergencies.

Solutions
Art of Technology developed a multi-sensor, non-intrusive wrist device which forms an integral part of the monitoring system providing vital health parameters such as pulse, temperature movement at regular intervals.
This vital data is monitored on an ongoing basis to identify typical behaviour patterns with any sudden changes reported instantaneously to the medical personnel enabling them to respond appropriately.
