Seismometer Electronic for the cancelled ESA mars mission «Netlander»
The Seismometer electronics control the legs of the measurement sphere, the internal seismic instruments including various types of sensors.
As part of the development of landing probes for the Mars mission «Netlander», Art of Technology conducted a feasibility study and a technology evaluation of the electronic controls.
Space Technology Study
Seismometer Electronic for the ESA Mars mission «Netlander».
Challenges
The main challenges were
High vibration levels during take-off
Low temperature storage during flight to Mars
High shock during landing on Mars
Wide temperature cycles during operation on Mars
Solution
Comprehensive Feasibility Study and Technology Evaluation submitted confirming the suitability of standard electronic components in the «Netlander» space probe:
SMD for small components
COB for large IC’s
Benefits
Reductions in size and weight led to a minimisation of stress on components and interconnections which in turn resulted in decreased sensitivity to vibration and shock and ultimately an improvement in reliability.
