Powerful processors and new algorithms allow relocation of hardware functions in software (e.g. filter, DC to AC converters). In certain cases, an improvement of the hardware functions can be achieved via software (e.g. improved resolution by oversampling).
The close interdependence requires careful system design taking into consideration the boundary conditions and factors such as performance, power consumption, space requirements and achievable performance.
