Power Management


Energy management is one of the key issues in the development of electronic systems. Especially in mobile and portable devices, where the optimal use of energy is of enormous importance and is directly related to the duration of the equipment which, as we know, should always be as long as possible.

 

But also from environmental considerations (apart from the fact that more and more laws on these issues are being adopted) out of network even when power to an optimal utilization of energy can be selected.

 

Art of Technology has many years of experience in the design and implementation of various power supplies.

 

Power Supply

Power supplies are required for every device. Larger devices with a mains connection are usually supplied by an off the shelve wall adaptor or by power supply module.

 

Other applications require custom design:

  • Mobile and Wearable devices are battery powered or require a contact less energy transmission
  • Power over Ethernet: Clients with Ethernet connections might be supplied over the standard network cable
  • Devices that work directly on the main supply are preferably supplied directly from the mains by a regulated AC/DC conversion.

 

All above systems require further power conversion in order to supply every part with the required voltage. The voltage conversions have to be designed for efficiency either to provide a long battery life or to avoid excessive heat.

 

Art of Technology is experienced in providing the suitable standard or custom power supply and power conversions as detailed below.

 

Battery powered systems

Battery powered systems have to be designed very carefully. Especially with small but energy consuming application a special focus has to be set on the appropriate system design, component selection and firmware in order to:

  • Minimise full speed time and full speed power requirement
  • Maximise conversion efficiency
  • Select the appropriate battery technology and charging system

 

The selection of the battery is often driven by the available volume and maximum weight in the system.

Wireless energy transmission

Wireless, or contact less, energy transmission is used when:

  • very little energy is required and seldom used
  • a battery cannot be integrated
  • power lines cannot  be installed

 

Well known applications are RFID tags. However, sensors within chemical reactors or medical implants also rely on electromagnetic energy transmission. The majority of Art of Technologies wireless energy developments are under NDA and therefore not available on this homepage.

Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet (POE) is an emerging standard for devices connected to the Ethernet. Instead of bulky wall adaptors the power is supplied by a power injector often already integrated in an Ethernet switch. POE reduces the cable mess and reduces the number of often less efficient cheap wall adapters. The distributed POE Voltage (48V) is converted locally.

 

POE is often used for supplying WLAN router, IP Phones etc. Art of Technology introduced POE supply for home automation main control (www.adhoco.ch). POE can also be used to supply non-POE enabled devices by a Power over Ethernet Adapter that provides a supply (12V or other) output.

 

Regulated AC/DC conversion (Mains supplied)

Control devices connected to the mains are supplied directly from the mains by capacitive power coupling, High voltage Step-down converters or input voltage regulated switches. Art of Technology is experienced to select the appropriate solution for your device in terms of power requirements, noise and size.
